In short: AVIA — the European fuel brand founded in 1927 — needed a premium promotional product for its 100-year anniversary: something customers would keep, not bin. ELiX re-engineered the client’s own tanker-truck design into a 50 × 25 mm multi-colour polymer vent-clip car air freshener, manufactured under private label in the EU under BRCGS certification. The colour is the polymer itself, not paint or print. The fragrance was selected from the ELiX library and approved without a revision round. Entry volume: 5,000 units per SKU, with custom-shape tooling at approximately €1,000 — against USD 20,000–80,000 for conventional two-shot multi-colour tooling.
The Challenge
A centenary campaign needs a promotional product the brand can stand behind
AVIA came to us with a brief that most promotional product suppliers quietly downgrade. The brand, founded in 1927 and present across Europe through independent member companies, was preparing its 100-year anniversary and wanted an item that would carry the anniversary identity properly — a premium corporate gift for forecourt customers and partners, not a printed card and not a generic blank with a sticker on it.
The client arrived with a design already in hand: its own tanker vehicle in full AVIA livery — red cab, white tank, the 100 years lockup across the barrel. The design was drawn the way brand assets usually are, for a rendering or a die-cast model. It was not drawn for a part that has to hold fragrance, release it evenly for weeks, and survive a customer’s hand.
Why most branded air fresheners quietly damage the brand
Colour separation on a small format is conventionally solved with two-shot (2K) tooling, which costs USD 20,000–80,000. Below that volume, the industry answer has been a single-colour blank with decoration applied on top — and applied decoration wears at exactly the points a customer touches. That is why so many branded car air fresheners end up looking like a discount version of the brand within a fortnight.
The Solution
Re-engineering a brand asset into a manufacturable shape
We did not take the design and quote it. We re-engineered it.
The first step was a manufacturability review against our own polymer technology — an in-house process, not EVA, developed in our lab rather than adapted from an existing mould library. That technology is the reason the colour in this polymer car air freshener is the polymer itself. Not paint, not print, not a label. It does not scuff, rub off or fade at the contact points, because there is no surface layer to lose. For a premium promotional product that has to look identical on day one and day thirty, that single property decides the outcome.
Working to that constraint, our design team rebuilt the client’s artwork as a production geometry at 50 × 25 mm:
- Detail triage. We identified which features of the original design survive at gadget scale and which turn into noise — mirror arms, door seams, grille slats — and removed or consolidated them without touching the silhouette that makes the vehicle recognisable.
- Colour fields. Every colour had to become a discrete, manufacturable area of polymer. We redrew the boundaries between cab, chassis, wheels and tank so that each one reads cleanly in the material.
- Brand-critical elements. The AVIA red, the wordmark and the 100 years lockup were treated as fixed points. Everything else was adjusted around them, so the anniversary message stays legible at the size a person actually holds.
- Running gear. The four-axle chassis was simplified into a repeating form that keeps the proportions of a tanker while remaining a sound part.
The client reviewed and approved the re-engineered design before tooling was cut.
Choosing the fragrance from the ELiX library — and getting it approved fast
A promotional item is looked at once and smelled for a month, so the fragrance had to fit the brand as precisely as the red did. Instead of opening a fragrance development project, we worked from our own in-house fragrance library: our perfumery team shortlisted profiles against the brand’s character and the way the item would actually be used, and AVIA approved the selection quickly — no revision round, no reformulation.
Two commercial consequences followed. The project carried no fragrance development fee, and formulation never entered the critical path — so the anniversary date governed the schedule, not the laboratory. This is the part of a custom air freshener project that buyers most often underestimate: the shape earns the first look, but the scent is what the recipient lives with, and it has to be as deliberately chosen as any other element of the brand’s identity.
Production ran in our EU facility under BRCGS certification, with full CLP labelling and Safety Data Sheets supplied for distribution across AVIA’s markets.
Our job was not to print AVIA’s brand onto a product. It was to rebuild the brand’s own vehicle as a manufacturable object, put the right scent inside it, and hand back something the brand team could sign off without a compromise.

Results
AVIA received an anniversary item that meets its own brand standard rather than the usual promotional-gift compromise: the company vehicle, in full centenary livery, in colour that is part of the material, clipped to the air vent where the driver sees it every journey.
The fragrance is declared at 30 days on pack, and our own retention testing shows up to 45 days in use. That is the real return on a promotional product — the brand stays present in the customer’s car for weeks after the moment it was handed over, in a scent the brand selected rather than one that came with the mould.
| Product | Custom-shape multi-colour polymer car air freshener |
|---|---|
| Format | Vent clip, 50 × 25 mm, brand vehicle silhouette |
| Colour | Colour in the polymer — no paint, print or applied label |
| Fragrance | Selected from the ELiX library; 30 days declared, up to 45 days tested |
| Minimum order | 5,000 units per SKU |
| Custom shape tooling | approx. €1,000 (optional prototype €1,200) |
| Fragrance development fee | None — library selection |
| Documentation | CLP labelling, Safety Data Sheets |
Those terms are what put a multi-colour, brand-accurate item with a properly chosen fragrance inside a promotional budget instead of a capital-equipment one.
Why This Matters
Almost every promotional product is a negotiation between brand fidelity and unit cost, and brand fidelity usually loses. The item gets approved because it is cheap and on time, then it sits in a customer’s car for a month looking like a discount version of the brand. The 2026 shift in corporate gifting — away from disposable giveaways, toward fewer items people actually keep — makes that trade-off harder to defend to a marketing director.
Which brands can use a custom-shape polymer car air freshener?
Coloured polymer changes the arithmetic for any company whose identity is attached to a recognisable object — a tanker, a delivery van, a mascot, a bottle, a logo silhouette. The shape becomes the product, the brand colours are the material, and the entry volume is a promotional quantity rather than a mass-production commitment. In practice that means fuel station networks, fleet and logistics operators, automotive aftermarket brands, car dealerships and workshops, retail chains, and the promotional product agencies that buy on their behalf.
The second half of the answer is the fragrance, and it is the half most promotional suppliers treat as an afterthought. A shape wins attention for a second; a scent that matches what the brand stands for holds it for a month. Selecting from a library that already covers the range, rather than developing from zero, is what makes that achievable inside a promotional timeline and budget — which is why we treat scent selection as part of the design work, not a line item at the end of it. Our independent market study sets out how the category compares on exactly these points.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order quantity for a custom-shape promotional car air freshener?
ELiX produces custom-shape polymer car air fresheners from 5,000 units per SKU. Dedicated tooling for a new shape costs approximately €1,000, with an optional prototype at €1,200. Selecting the fragrance from the existing ELiX library means no fragrance development fee is charged.
How can a multi-colour promotional air freshener be produced without expensive two-shot tooling?
Conventional multi-colour (2K, two-shot) tooling costs USD 20,000–80,000. ELiX uses its own in-house polymer technology — in which each colour is a distinct area of the polymer itself rather than paint, print or an applied label. That makes a genuinely multi-colour branded air freshener viable at promotional volumes from 5,000 units.
How long does the fragrance in a polymer car air freshener last?
ELiX declares 30 days on pack, and our own retention testing shows performance of up to 45 days in use. For a promotional campaign that means the brand stays present in the recipient’s car for roughly a month after the item is handed over.
Can ELiX work from artwork or a design our brand already has?
Yes. In the AVIA project the client supplied a design of its own tanker vehicle. Our team carried out a manufacturability review and re-engineered the artwork into a production geometry at 50 × 25 mm — consolidating fine detail, defining discrete colour fields and protecting brand-critical elements — with client approval before tooling was cut.
What compliance documentation is supplied for EU distribution?
We manufacture in the European Union under BRCGS certification and supply CLP labelling and Safety Data Sheets with production orders, so the product can be distributed across EU markets by retail, automotive and fuel-network partners.
Can we develop an exclusive fragrance instead of using a library scent?
Yes. Developing a new fragrance version carries a €1,000 development start fee per version, covering the project start, one sample and one revision. Selecting from the existing ELiX library avoids that fee and removes formulation from the critical path — usually the right choice for an anniversary or promotional campaign working to a fixed date.
